Vatnajokull National Park
An amazing place to visit, this lovely national park is dominated by the massive Vatnajokull glacier which stretches interminably into the distance, a perfect sea of white snow. Trekking amongst the spectacular rock formations on show is awe-inspiring and the towering mountain ranges are home to some delightful waterfalls as well as some unbelievable panoramas. Before leaving make sure to head to the otherworldly Jokulsarlon: a lagoon which is dotted with innumerable icebergs and small snow-clad islands – you won’t regret it!
Snaefellsjokull National Park
Another humongous glacier, the icy Snaefellsjokull leads right up until the edge of the ocean where cragged cliffs drop steeply down towards the frothing waves. Wandering around the park is delightful as waterfalls fall away to either side of you and volcanic craters dot the weathered landscape. With numerous caves to explore, this national park’s wild and untamed features make it a firm favourite with visitors to the country.
The Blue Lagoon
Wading through the warm waters as mist and steam swirls all about you; visiting the Blue Lagoon is the perfect way to not only experience Iceland’s famous hot springs but also to take in the beauty of the turquoise scene. A lovely place to stop off and relax for a bit, this fabulous spa is located on a lava field and its mineral rich mud that coats the bottom of the pools is fantastic for your skin. One of the most popular attractions in the whole of Iceland, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place to relax after trekking through the desolate landscapes of the island.
Thorsmork Nature Reserve
One of the best locations in the country for hiking, the beautiful geological formations in this nature reserve mean that you’ll never get bored trekking through the mountains and volcanoes that dot the area. With rolling valleys stretching down from the peaks and plateaus of Thorsmork and small forests dotted about here and there, the distinctive landscapes on offer make the reserve a great place to stop off when you’re travelling around Iceland.
Thingvellir National Park
Lying at the spot where two tectonic plates come together, this delightful national park understandably has some incredible geological features as rocky ravines lie side by side with towering mountains and bubbling lava fields. With lakes and rivers cutting through the countryside and the lovely Oxarafoss waterfall to boot, Thingvellir National Park’s great hiking options and stunning scenery makes it a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike.
